We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to volunteer and help support our Math Elites + U Summer Camp in collaboration with Markham Public Library, where you will be working alongside camp counsellors to provide a fun and safe environment for campers!
About York Region Educational Services and this Opportunity:
York Region Educational Services (YRES) is a not-for-profit organization that provides individuals in the vicinity of York Region with free or affordable educational resources in a safe and supportive environment that inspires, motivates, and helps set the foundation for personal growth. Partnering with Markham Public Library, we are thrilled to host Math Elites + U camps for children in Grade 1-4 at the Milliken Mills Library, and we are seeking volunteers that are interested in supporting this program.
Key responsibilities are as follows:
- Assist camp counsellors in leading small-group activities and team-building exercises, when instructed
- Ensure campers are safe, supervised, and abiding by camp rules at all times
- Communicate with campers, parents (occasionally), and other staff members
- Attend meetings and training sessions as required in June
- Assist with maintaining cleanliness and organization of the campsite
- Help manage disciplinary issues and conflicts that may arise
Time commitment:
- Camp runs from July 8-12, 2024 and July 22-26 from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday
- There are three shift options: mornings (8:45am to 12:30pm), afternoons (12:30pm to 4:15pm), and full day (8:45am to 4:15pm)
- Your commitment must be by the week (Monday to Friday), e.g., the week of July 8
There will be virtual training sessions in May and in-person training sessions on Saturdays at Aaniin Community Centre in June. More details to be followed in May.
Camp location: Milliken Mills Library (7600 Kennedy Road, Markham, ON L3R 9S5)
A great candidate for this position will possess the following:
- Must be 14+ years of age
- At least 3 months of experience working with children, preferred
- Ability to motivate children towards learning new skills
- Collaboration skills
- Self-management skills and the ability to demonstrate responsible, ethical, and professional conduct - YOU are the role model
- Enthusiasm and passion towards working with children

- Willing to undergo a background or police records check
- Must be of age 14 or above
- Own laptop with internet access and camera
- Willing to undergo Saturday trainings in June
