The Ralph Thornton Community Centre’s Mentor Program provides a positive and supportive space to help newcomer Chinese children from our community improve their English language skills and feel more comfortable living in a new country and culture.

About This Opportunity

Volunteers MUST be 15 years of age or older.

This program is Hybrid. If you are interested in volunteering virtually, you MUST have a computer or tablet that can run ZOOM, a phone will NOT suffice for this program.

Mentor program for newcomer Chinese children runs from Monday to Thursday 4:00-6:00 pm. Volunteers who are able to commit to 2 shifts per week (Mon & Wed OR Tues & Thurs) are preferred.
Monday and Tuesday is in-person
Wednesday and Thursday is virtual

Volunteers are matched with a student or a small group of students.

The goals of the program are to enhance the children's English language skills and to provide a smooth transition to arriving in Canada

Volunteers will be assisting students with reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary and pronunciation.

Volunteer will be helping kids obtain better learning habits.

Volunteers will help students become more familiar with Canadian culture through a wide variety of activities such as games, crafts, and special activities.

Volunteers will also assist the program coordinator with special themed group activities.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Good spoken and written English
  • Committed
  • Comfortable using computers, experience leading a ZOOM meeting and sharing screen, proficient with Google Drive
  • Dependable / positive attitude
  • Patience with children
  • Enjoy working with children
  • Desire to acquire leadership skills
  • **Preferred but not necessary** spoken Mandarin
