About This Opportunity

The Alberta Railway Museum, operated by the Alberta Pioneer Railway Association, is dedicated to preserving and showcasing Alberta's rich railway history. Located in North Edmonton, the museum offers a unique opportunity for visitors of all ages to explore the impact of railroads on the province's development. The museum is committed to engaging the community through education, restoration projects, archives and heritage railway operations.

We are currently seeking passionate, dedicated individuals to join our Board of Directors starting in January 2025. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the museum's mission and play a pivotal role in shaping its future.

 Role and Responsibilities

As a Board Member, you will be responsible for helping guide the Alberta Railway Museum toward a sustainable and successful future. Key duties include:

  •  Providing strategic oversight and governance to ensure the museum’s operations align with its mission and values.
  • Supporting fundraising and community outreach efforts to promote the museum's growth and impact.
  • Assisting with the oversight of heritage railway operations, restoration activities, and exhibitions.
  • Collaborating with fellow board members and museum staff to build a strong and vibrant community of supporters.
  • Representing the museum at public events and helping raise awareness of the museum’s work in Alberta.

Qualifications

  • Passion for History and Heritage Preservation: A deep interest in Alberta history and the desire to share this knowledge with future generations.
  • Commitment to Service: Willingness to dedicate approximately 10 hours per month to board activities, including meetings and participation in various initiatives.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Ability to work well with diverse individuals and teams in a friendly and results-driven environment.
  • Experience in Governance (Preferred): While prior experience on a nonprofit board is helpful, it is not a requirement.
  • Experience in heritage, museum operations, or related fields is also an asset but not mandatory.

Why Join?

Make an Impact: Help preserve and share Alberta's railway history for future generations.

Engage with the Community: Connect with fellow history enthusiasts, industry professionals, and volunteers.

Work with Passionate People: Join a dedicated team of board members and museum staff who share a love for history and community outreach.

Commitment and Process

Board members are asked to commit to approximately 10 hours per month, with the opportunity to be involved in a variety of exciting museum activities, events, and projects.

All candidates will undergo a review process, and a slate of finalists will be presented for approval at the museum's Annual General Meeting (AGM) in late January 2025. If you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors of the Alberta Railway Museum, please contact Kevin at 780-231-0436 or email volunteer@albertarailwaymuseum.come no later than December 15, 2024.
