About the Company

The Building Black Youth Foundation(BBYF) is a not for profit organization that provides educational and mental health support for children, youth and families aged 0-19. We also provide cultural based learning opportunities that connect children and youth to their culture and history, supporting and encouraging them, to build self worth and self belief. We connect parents with needed resources, information and local services and provide fun, engaging learning opportunities for our children and youth.

Mission

Building Black Youth Foundation's mission is to provide children, youth and families the educational, mental health support they need through their developmental and educational journeys. Our programs  build self belief and character in our children/youth through our unique programing.

Position

The Board will support the work of the Building Black Youth Foundation and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Building Black Youth Foundation’s chief executive officer (CEO), the Board-CEO relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. 

Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, governance and oversight

•Serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO as s/he develops and implements Building Black Youth Foundation's strategic plan

•Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by Building Black Youth Foundation for evaluating its impact, and regularly 

measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviewing agenda and 

supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings

•Approving Building Black Youth Foundation’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities

•Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the CEO

•Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the Building Black Youth Foundation to advance its mission. 

•Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve Building Black Youth Foundation's 

mission.

•Assisting the CEO and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members

•Partnering with the CEO and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out

•Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments

•Representing Building Black Youth Foundation to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization

•Ensuring Building Black Youth Foundation’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities Building Black Youth Foundation serves

•Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings.

•Participate fully in one or more committees

•Sign an annual NDA, non compete and conflict-of-interest disclosures and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings.

•Maintain strict confidentiality about all internal matters of Building Black Youth Foundation.

Fundraising

•Building Black Youth Foundation Board Members will consider BBYF a philanthropic priority and reflect that priority by annually securing funding and donations. So that BBYF can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals. 

•Building Black Youth Foundation expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make or secure an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

•Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and can influence public policy.

•Identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major individual donors, corporate, and/or foundation gifts.

•In collaboration with the CEO, generating substantial annual revenue and fostering BBYF’s overall financial health.

Board terms/participation

Building Black Youth Foundation’s Board Members will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional 

term. Board meetings will be held quarterly on the 30th or 31st and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full 

board meetings. One monthly or bi-monthly board meeting will take place on the 30th or 31st of the month.

QUALIFICATIONS

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Building Black Youth Foundation's mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to 

attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications: 

•Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.

•A commitment to and understanding of Building Black Youth Foundation's beneficiaries, preferably based on experience.

•Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, 

convening, facilitating, and building 

consensus among diverse individuals.

•Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of XYZ’s 

beneficiaries.

*Service on Building Black Youth Foundation’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.
