About This Opportunity
The Treasurer commits approximately 7 hours per month, which includes time for meeting preparation, attending committee and board meetings, and participating in special events. This is a three-year term, renewable up to two additional times, for a maximum of nine years of service.
In addition to the general duties expected of all board members, the Treasurer holds specific responsibilities. These include ensuring that the board reviews the annual budget as well as any financial policies and procedures that pertain to the board. The Treasurer also serves as the chairperson of the Finance Committee and acts as an authorized signing authority for the organization.
The Treasurer is accountable to the board of directors and is expected to act in the best interests of the organization as a whole. However, the role does not include formal authority to direct the board or the organization’s operations unless explicitly authorized. Like all board members, the Treasurer may make motions and vote on matters brought before the board. The Treasurer may not enter into contracts on behalf of the organization without the knowledge and approval of the board and/or the executive committee, including the executive director.
Ideal candidates for the Treasurer role will demonstrate a strong commitment to the organization’s mission and have a clear understanding of its governance policies, by-laws, and record-keeping practices. Preference will be given to individuals with a CPA or similar accounting designation or education, along with experience in financial management, non-profit budgeting, and financial reporting. The role also requires sufficient time to meet the responsibilities of both the Treasurer and a board director. The Treasurer’s effectiveness will be evaluated as part of the board’s overall performance assessment.
