About This Opportunity
About Us: The Leacock Foundation is a registered Canadian charity based in Toronto. Our mission is to confront inequity by empowering children and youth to develop the critical and creative thinking skills to be confident leaders now and in the future.
Board Responsibilities:
- Serve as a member of the Board of Directors and the Audit Committee
- Attend quarterly Board meetings
- Read materials and come prepared to Board meetings
Financial Oversight Responsibilities
- Provide overall direction for all financial management, accounting and budgeting functions on behalf of the Board.
- Educate and advise the Board and Staff on financial matters.
- Present quarterly financial reports, including revenue/expense statements to the Board of the Directors at the Board meetings.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Operations Coordinator to establish an annual budget and continuously improve reporting practices.
- Support the Executive Director in presenting the proposed Annual Budget to the Board of Directors.
- Ensure compliance with all legal and CRA requirements, including the completion of the annual audit and submission of the annual tax return - T3010.
- Act as one of the main contacts for auditors during the annual audit, including attending meetings and discussing audit findings with staff and Board of Directors.
- Present audited financial statements to the Board of Directors as provided by auditors at the annual general meeting.
- Serve as one of the signing officers, with authority to purpose, reinvest and sell investments. Ensure submission of GST/HST rebate every six months as required.
- Access Quickbooks to oversee revenues /expenditures as well conduct reviews.
- Ensure appropriate financial records are maintained by the Leacock staff.
Competencies
- Strong attention to detail and adherence to deadlines
- Proficiency in financial and accounting concerts, budgets, investments, and financial reports Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, relevant regulations and guidelines
Time Commitment:
Approximately 8 hours per month (additional hours during audit season) including quarterly Board meetings

- Commitment to Leacock’s mission and strategic direction
- Understanding of and experience with sound financial management and reporting practices.
- Willingness and availability to commit the necessary time to fulfill the responsibilities outlined
