About This Opportunity
Duties of Welcome Group volunteers might vary based on the family’s needs, some of which might include:
- Build a positive and trusting relationship with newcomer families
- Socialize and engage with the matched newcomer family to help building connections and enhance their sense of belonging in the community
- Provide interpretation support if you speak the same language of the family
- Provide advice, insights and guidance related to the family area of interest and needs
- Escort the newcomer clients to appointments and help them to navigate the public transportation system
- Provide information and share resources based on the family needs
- Help children with schoolwork
- Navigate the heath care and other services
- Hold a casual conversation with parents/ adult family member to enhance English skills
Qualifications
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Patience, well understanding of issues facing newcomers
- Availability to meet regularly with the matched family in person or virtually
- Required to provide a valid Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) Police check.
