About This Opportunity

• Report in and out of the Emergency Department to the Unit Clerk

 • Sign out panic button (remember to sign back in at end of shift)

• Keep the Waiting Room organized. 

 • Watch for visitors as they arrive, retrieve wheelchairs for patients as required, converse with and comfort patients, assist patients with young children. 

• Encourage patients with a cough to put on a mask upon entering the ER and prior to seeing the Triage nurse. 

 • Escort patients for See & Treat across the hallway to the new location 

• Inform patients/families/friends of extended waiting times (i.e. automobile accidents with critical patients who need care first, volume etc.). 

• When a wheelchair is required or requested, provide general instructions on its use. (i.e. Brakes). Offer assistance with the wheelchair as necessary. 

 • If the Emergency Waiting room is busy, stay at the desk to answer questions. • The Quiet Room/ Family Room is available for traumatic/stressful family situations. Please ensure the room is neat and tidy with adequate tissue. Social work is available from Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:00pm. After these hours there is also the Mental Health Crisis Nurse who can be contacted by the nursing staff if needed. 

 • Volunteers assist with non-medical/supportive needs that build on the care provided by staff. • Do not offer warm sheets to patients in the waiting room unless requested by staff. 

 • Maintain confidentiality at all times, both internal and external. 

• Wash your hands frequently while on duty to help reduce the spread of infection. Volunteers may use the sinks in the Treatment Rooms or the antibacterial foam from the dispensers. Gloves can be worn at the discretion of the volunteer.

 • If uncertain about a patient’s request or performing a task, seek direction from appropriate staff. 

 • Inform Triage nurse if someone in the waiting room looks like they are getting worse. • Encourage someone who is going to leave without being seen to talk to the triage nurse prior to leaving. If the person is not willing to inform the triage nurse, please advise the triage nurse that the patient has left. 

• Remind anyone who is parked directly in front of Emergency, to move as soon as possible to the parking lot. • Assist with way finding and offer directions to visitors who are looking for other departments or services, such as Admitting, Tim Hortons, Cafeteria, Chapel, telephone, etc.

 • When your shift if over, or you are taking your 15 minute break please report off and on to the Unit Clerk. • Volunteer Safety is of the utmost importance. If a volunteer has a patient/visitor confront them, report directly to the triage/charge nurse, or notify press code white panic button (they only work within the ED). DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN HARMS WAY!

 • Demonstrate commitment and pride by role modeling and speaking positively about Brant Community Healthcare System, the ER department, employees, volunteers and customers. 

 • Assist with the assembly of “Clean Catch” urine packages 

• Assist with rolling blue tourniquets. 

• Pick up discharge papers from all zones and deliver to registration clerk
