About This Opportunity
GET INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR EVERYDAY PROBLEMS
Engineering Strategies and Practice (ESP), a first-year U of T Engineering course, provides 1000+ students with invaluable hands-on experience, empowering them to tackle real-world challenges alongside our valued community of volunteers.
Do you have a challenge or issue at home, work, or in your neighbourhood that could be solved through engineering design? Volunteer as an ESP client and receive innovative solutions from our students. The time commitment is only 4-6 hours between January to April and there is no cost to participate.
Every year, we seek hundreds of authentic real-world problems for our students to engage with and your contributions would be tremendously beneficial for their learning. No experience necessary and anyone can submit a project idea.
What are my responsibilities as a volunteer client?
- Work with U of T staff to develop the scope of your project
- Meet with your team in the Winter term for three one-hour meetings
- Direct your team to appropriate resources and contacts
- (Optional) Attend your team’s final presentation held in April at the University of Toronto
What can I expect from student design teams?
- Meet with you to understand the challenge, goals, and criteria for success
- Conduct in-depth research to analyze user needs, including interviews with potential users
- Develop a design solution that will meet your users’ needs
- Prepare a final report that presents the research and proposed solution
- Deliver an oral presentation that features a demonstration of the solution
