About This Opportunity

Currently, a team of 30 members is building a large-scale, kinetic, and interactive sculpture that focuses on the impact of air quality. It explores a new way of artistic activism and impact measurement - evoking empathy through emotionally resonant experiences with art. We are looking for a driven and creative Full Stack Engineer to join our Digital Design Team as part of the “When Air Takes Shape” project. We are developing a program that acquires recurring air quality data from open-source APIs, transmits them to the installation, and translates them into output to control the sculpture’s “breathing” movements. The front end of the program enables the user to select a country/region for the sculpture to manifest air quality data and access highly interactive educational content related to air quality and climate change. Collection and storage of user data (voluntarily input via a feedback survey) will also be required. The volunteer will play an important role in the following aspects: • Design and develop innovative software • Construct the front and back-end of our web app in collaboration with 2 other members of the Application Development team • Work with the design lead to implement product design • Write and maintain a clean codebase using modern best practices: • Document all work • Write and carry tests and diagnostic tools • Maintain a CI pipeline • Test for and address bugs • Monitoring the performance of internal systems • Closely collaborate with the UX Design Lead, Data Science Lead, and Mechatronics Lead Qualifications: • Enthusiastic about ATTA's mission and vision • Experience with Javascript technologies (JavaScript, Typescript, React, React Native, Node.js) • A solid understanding of software engineering practices and principles • Ability to work with APIs and automation • Ability to work independently • Interest and passion to work on data related to environmental sustainability and social impact • Feeling ready to embrace an awesome and supportive community of creators! Timeline and Location: Starting in July 2023, this is a 6-month volunteer position with an average time commitment of approximately 3-5 hours per week (flexible). You will be working mostly remotely. Occasional in-person attendance at the FabLab space (in Vancouver, BC) is welcomed but not required for this position.
