About This Opportunity

Garden Volunteer 

 ROLE OVERVIEW The Garden Volunteer is responsible for our plot in the Inglewood Community Garden including planting seeds, harvesting, delivering harvest to Discovery House, and cleaning up the plot. During summer camp, the volunteer will also provide workshops about gardening and nature. 

 GOALS This role provides fresh produce to our families and is essential to food dignity. The role also provides an opportunity for clients to learn about the process of planting, growing and harvesting the garden. 

 ACTIVITIES/TASKS In May seeds must be planted, only plants appropriate to Discovery House clients should be planted. This will be discussed with your supervisor. Appropriate plants include but are not limited to tomatoes, kale, beets and zucchini. The volunteer is responsible for watering as needed for each stage of plant development. As well as weeding and harvesting. At the end of the season, the volunteer must clean out the plot. When Discovery House runs its annual summer camp (4 weeks during July or August), the volunteer will provide workshops 1x a week to the children when they visit the community garden. 

 TIME COMMITMENT May-October 

 CADENCE Approximately 1-2 hours per week (more at the start of the season and less during harvest weeks). 

 ORIENTATION AND TRAINING A vulnerable sector police check and intervention record check are required for this role (fee covered by Discovery House). The volunteer is expected to have good working knowledge of gardening. Discovery House will provide an orientation. Inglewood Garden will provide an orientation of the garden. 

 PERSONAL TRAITS NEEDED OR DESIRED A love of gardening and passion to share the information. 

 SUPERVISOR Child & Youth Team Lead 

 WORKING CONDITIONS Must have own car and a valid driver’s license. This role is mainly outdoors, requires travel and heavy lifting. 

 BENEFITS TO VOLUNTEER The volunteer has a direct impact on the food dignity of Discovery House clients and has the opportunity to impart their passion and knowledge to the children at Discovery House.
