EVERMORE OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH AGED 13 TO 17 TO VOLUNTEER IN OUR PROGRAMS TO GAIN LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH CHILDREN. SOME STUDENTS USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TOWARDS CREDIT FOR HIGHSCHOOL OR AS A WAY TO REMAIN CONNECTED TO THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM AFTER GRADE 6.
EVERMORE CURRENTLY HAS A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM A DANIEL MCINTYRE COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE, WHERE A LEADERSHIP STUDENT COMMITS TO VOLUNTEER WEEKLY AT THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM. WE TYPICALLY SEE 12-18 VOLUNTEERS EACH SCHOOL TERM.
SOME YOUTH THEN MOVE ON TO PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT WITH EVERMORE WHEN THEY TURN 18.
Job Profile
- Reporting to the Evermore Program Manager, with direction and input from Evermore staff, the Volunteer is responsible for assisting Evermore staff in delivering recreational programming for children in designated programs in the West Central neighborhood of Winnipeg. This is a volunteer position.
- Youth Volunteer Expectations and Responsibilities Commitment: •
- The hours of operation are 3:30 to 5:00 pm. The expectation is that you will be at program prior to 4:00 pm.
- •Regular attendance at program is expected on the days that you have chosen to commit Weekly attendance is required, 1-5 times per week. With a set schedule.
- If you are running late or are unable to make it for your shift, a phone call or email is required. If you are sick or unable to make program, Evermore requires a phone call before 3 pm, so staff are not expecting you and can modify the days plan for program.
- Due to the relationships formed with the program participants; a minimum of 1 school year commitment is preferred. Evermore is flexible in making a volunteer schedule that works for you. To make changes to your schedule (including coming to volunteer for additional shifts beyond your scheduled times) speak with the volunteer supervisor, and/or the Program Manager.
Delivering programs:
- Assisting staff in all aspects of running program, Including but not limited to:
- Preparing and/or handing out snack o Assisting/running games
- Teaching and participating in a variety of activities with program participants
- Learning and enforcing Evermore’s safety rules
- Acquiring needed materials and equipment.
- Supervising participants
Responding quickly and effectively to emergency or crisis situations
- Identifying potential behavior issues and patterns, and reporting them to a Evermore staff
- Volunteers are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to lead activities during program, with support from staff
- Facilitates Evermore’s programs including special projects in collaborations with other volunteers or Evermore staff •
- Engage participants in an activity at all times during your shift
It is the volunteer’s responsibility to stay busy, if you cannot find something to do, ask an Evermore staff for direction. Develop friendly relationships with participants, but remember volunteers are there to help lead, and supervise program and if there is a conflict you must agree with Evermore staff. If you have concerns with how a situation is handled you may raise it with the staff away from the participants.
Risk Management:
• Dealing with incidents and sensitive issues in an appropriate and confidential manner
• Notifies Evermore staff of risk situations in a timely manner
• Observing necessary precautions to ensure an environment that is physically and emotionally safe Accountabilities
A Volunteer is accountable for:
• Upholding the mission statement and values of Evermore
• Representing Evermore in a positive manner through professional conduct
• Acting as a positive role model for children Qualifications Education:
• Be currently enrolled in a Junior High or High School in Grades 7-12, with good attendance Experience
• Experience in programming development and delivery for children is an asset, but not required Knowledge, skills and abilities
• Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships
• Ability to speak, listen and write in a clear, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques
• Ability to work cooperatively with others to set goals, resolve conflicts and make decisions that enhance the effectiveness of Evermore
• Ability to physically play and demonstrate games to groups of children ranging in age from 6 to 12 years old • Ability to work with arts and crafts materials
• A willingness to learn.
• Must demonstrate patience, enthusiasm, initiative, flexibility and a willingness to meet new challenges Working Conditions
• Programming environments at Evermore program sites (0utdoor and indoor work and play)
