About This Opportunity
Please reach out with your @mylaurier.ca email as this opportunity is only available to WLU Brantford students!
Laurier Students for Literacy (LSFL) is a group of students from Wilfrid Laurier University's Brantford Campus. We are committed to advancing literacy and academic success for children within the Brantford community. We offer three unique programs, all entirely volunteer-based and free of cost to families. All of our programming is run out of the Brantford Public Library (Main Branch) which is located conveniently on campus or online via Zoom. Programming runs from Monday-Friday with 45 minute time slots available from 4:00pm-7:00pm. Volunteers can choose their own timeslot and programming runs on the university's schedule, following the semester schedules with time off during reading weeks, exam periods, and campus closures. We also nearly always have Community Service Learning placement opportunities!
Our programs include:
Book Buddies
Book Buddies is our most popular program. It is a one-to-one pairing of a volunteer tutor and a child in grades 2-6. The volunteer works on literacy and reading skills with the student for 45 minutes once per week. Volunteers are allowed and encouraged to be creative and have fun with their buddy!
Homework Help
Homework Help is very similar to Book Buddies. It is a one-to-one pairing of volunteer tutors and students from grades 2-8 on general academic skills. Students will bring any homework they received at school, and volunteer tutors will assist them with understanding and completion.
Reading Club
Reading Club is a program designed specifically for students in grades 7/8. Volunteer tutors will work as a group to deliver novel study programming and literacy activities to a group of older students every week. Reading Club will only run in person for the 2025/2026 school year. It will take place at the Brantford Public Library (Main Branch) on Thursdays from 6:30pm-7:30pm.
Joining LSFL is a great opportunity for anyone who hopes to work with children in the future or needs a CSL placement. It also looks spectacular on a resume! We would love to have you join our team!
