The Neighbour to Neighbour Math Success Program is an after-school program provided to students in grades 7 & 8 from four schools (Westview, Annunciation of Our Lord, Helen Detwiler and St. Marguerite d’Youville) Our program is run out of either the Community Food Kitchen or Turner Library

Our Goal is to: • Improve math skills and curriculum understanding in students in Grade 7 and 8 • Develop study and test-taking skills • Create positive role models from Secondary and Post-Secondary Schools and from within the community. • Improve confidence and develop positive attitudes towards learning

Description of Role: Math tutors, youth, and adults, should have a good knowledge of basic math skills, a passion for math and the ability to relate to students in Grades 7 & 8.

Activities/Tasks: Math tutors participate in the Facilitator led instructional portion of the session. After the instructional portion, tutors and students break out into small groups. We hope to have a 3:1 student-to-tutor ratio. You may need to further explain the exercise to ensure that students understand concepts and theories. You may need to relate real-life scenarios and applications to aid the students’ understanding. You will help and support the students as they complete their lessons and homework, if applicable. You will use effective praise and model a positive attitude toward learning to build self-confidence.

Duties/Responsibilities: Attend training and orientation sessions. Follow program policies and procedures. Math Tutors are expected to complete program evaluations, maintain confidentiality and participate in Success Celebrations.

Skills Required: Must understand and be able to explain basic math concepts, theories and practices. You will need excellent interpersonal and communication skills, especially with students in grades 7 & 8. Experience working with children/youth would be an asset. Ability to read, write and speak English. Tutors must have excellent time management skills and be able to work well in a group. Tutors must be receptive to suggestions and guidance provided by the Educational Consultants and the Tutoring Coordinator.

Reporting Structure: Tutors report to the N2N Facilitator.

Expected Results: The goals, as outlined above, are met. Day/Time Requirements: Once or Twice a week from 3:45-5:00 pm.
