About This Opportunity

Currently, a team of 30 members is building a large-scale, kinetic, and interactive sculpture that focuses on the impact of air quality. It explores a new way of artistic activism and impact measurement - evoking empathy through emotionally resonant experiences with art.

Role Description: We are looking for driven & creative motor experts, mechatronics and general mechanical members to join our Mechatronics-Structural team as part of the “When Air Takes Shape” project. We are currently actuating an origami-shaped fabric using stepper motors to achieve a range of three-dimensional motions. The volunteer(s) can play an important role in the following aspects:

-Synchronize multiple stepper motors together to achieve coordinated, simultaneous, and breath-like movement.

Example tasks include: -Install and connect the motors to their drivers -Use C++ to control the motors (bluepill, Arduino)

-Test different synchronization options to actuate the fabric in different ways & create “breathing” motions

-Test and optimize motor control code and circuits

-Work closely with the other members of the team -Design different mechanical components of the final installation

-CAD work (parts and scale-up model)

-Build the final installation (hands-on work with shop tools with training and guidance from project leads)

Qualifications: -Enthusiastic about ATTA's mission and vision -Strong motor control knowledge and experience -Experience working with stepper motors -Proficiency in C++ -Experience with the Arduino framework and microcontrollers -General understanding of electrical components -Design and CAD experience -Love for hands-on work and problem-solving -Ability to work independently and in a team -Ability to take initiative -Strong communication skills -Feeling ready to embrace an awesome and supportive community of creators! You do not need all the technical qualifications listed above to apply, but at least one of the following: experience with motors and microcontrollers, design and CAD experience, and strong hands-on building experience.

Timeline and Location: Starting in June 2023, this is a 4-month volunteer position with an average time commitment of approximately 3-5 hours per week (flexible). You will be working mostly in person at FabLab (in Vancouver, BC). Research and CAD work can be done remotely.
