About This Opportunity
The Child and Youth Mentor is an adult community volunteer who engages in mentoring friendships with young people. Mentors act as a positive role model and advocate for young people and engage in social activities and individual matches geared to the needs of the Mentees.
A Mentor's role is to be an adult friend and guide for children and youth- to listen and provide advice when appropriate- to role model appropriate behaviours and reinforce positive social skills- to provide encouragement and support to help them build self esteem and confidence.
Mentors can participate in various group programs and community activities as well as individual matches. Weekly group programs include: Kid's Club for 7-11 year olds, Tween Zone for 12-13 year olds and Teen Group for 14-17 year olds. Community Activities include: Cooking Club, Sports Club, Adventure Club and Art Club.
Mentors should have good rapport with children and youth, be of good character and be honest and dependable. Although there are no specific skill sets required, a willingness to share your passions and talents with young people, to act as a confidant and to positively engage with them is crucial for building meaningful relationships. Being real and having fun makes a difference in these kids lives.
Mentors are required to complete a screening process, Child Safety Training and submit vulnerable sector checks.
Commitment is as little as 2 hours a month up to weekly activities. There is flexibility in our schedule to give what time you are able.
