Toronto Grace Health Centre (Specialized Care Centre, Scarborough) - Patient Care Unit Volunteer About the Organization The Salvation Army Toronto Grace Health Centre (TGHC) is a 150-bed facility located in downtown Toronto. TGHC provides medically complex, and specialized care and services to those individuals who require Complex Continuing Care, Post-Acute Care Rehabilitation, Palliative Care and Transitional Care. The hospital is recognized for its commitment to clinical excellence and a compassionate approach to patient centered care. We serve primarily an adult and geriatric patient population. SCC-Specialized Care Centre is an alternative health facility (one of the offsite units of TGHC) located in Scarborough. We rent the 5th floor space from Tendercare Living Centre and currently operating at 55 beds. Our patient population consists of ALC designated older adults, short term respite care patients and medically stable post-surgical recovery older adult patients. Join our caring team! About the Patient Care Volunteer Role This rewarding role provides the opportunity to work as a valued member of the patient care team helping to support quality of life for our transitional care patients. An interest in working with people, flexibility and a comfort level in the hospital setting, assisting people who are experiencing complex health issues are important qualities to bring to this role. Volunteers provide invaluable support by visiting with patients, encourage participation in activities like Arts & craft, gardening, playing games etc. and provide support to the care team. Most importantly, the time volunteers spend with patients supports a friendly, compassionate and supportive environment. Opportunities are available Monday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis for this role. Volunteers accepted to the program receive an orientation, patient care training and ongoing support through volunteer gatherings and educational sessions. The patient care volunteer role requires a 4 hour, weekly commitment for a minimum of one year. This role is best suited for adult applicants (i.e. professionals, retired, recent grads) or individuals with related or transferable experience who would be comfortable volunteering in challenging setting assisting a more complex patient population. The ability of our volunteers to ensure a regular and reliable commitment is essential to the success of our program.
