About This Opportunity

Youth Advocacy and Volunteerism Director Member of the Board leads initiatives to empower and engage youth in environmental causes. This dynamic role involves fostering a sense of environmental stewardship, coordinating volunteer programs, and shaping the next generation of eco-conscious leaders in the Saskatoon community.  This is a hybrid role, there is capacity for some virtual programming, however, ideally, in person programming would be better on site at the afforestation areas, or in the community facility provided by the group engaging a program.

At The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, we cherish the invaluable contributions of our volunteers, especially the vibrant participation of our youth members. Our organization provides year-round opportunities for youth/seniors/the public to embark on outdoor adventures and immerse themselves in nature while working alongside our dedicated group leaders.  These services strengthen communities by connecting people with programs, information, recreational activities and services about our local environment and heritage, engaging the community in ways which enhance social, and communication skills through engaging interactions with others supportive of an active and engaged lifestyle

Communities are asked to provide a space for the in-person workshop and presentation to occur.  If groups are able, please consider making a donation of $2 per participant for workshops inclusive of any arts and crafts content.

By joining us, youth can look forward to a rewarding journey of connecting with local participants, planning, and delivering community-based conservation service projects right in their own neighborhoods. These projects are designed and current projects are reviewed by the Group/Volunteer Director to create a positive impact on the local environment and foster a deep sense of environmental stewardship. Our volunteers and youth participants are the heart of our mission. They play a pivotal role in the success of our events and initiatives, ensuring that everything runs seamlessly and participants enjoy a fantastic experience. 

Depending on the event, there are various roles and responsibilities that our volunteers can take on: Volunteers and youth participants at The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas play diverse and vital roles in advancing our mission of environmental conservation and protection.

The programs may serve seniors, senior groups, schools, youth groups, classrooms, persons with varying abilities, providing programming which are Anti-racisist and Anti-oppressive/Decolonization. furthers Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, serving equity deserving groups/Human rights (Aboriginal peoples, Visible minorities, Persons with disabilities, Women). promoting Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, supporting diversity and Inclusion/Cultural Competency in the workplace and accessibility for people with disabilities, promoting . Community Safety & Wellbeing,  Social Development. and Age Friendly programs

Here are some key roles Youth / Senior Advocacy and Volunteerism Director Member of the Board might fulfill: 

1. Environmental Stewards: Volunteers and youth actively engage in conservation efforts, such as tree planting, habitat restoration, and litter clean-ups, contributing to the preservation and enhancement of our afforestation areas. 

2. Community Educators: They assist in organizing and leading educational programs and workshops to raise awareness about environmental issues, sustainable practices, and the importance of biodiversity. 

3. Event Organizers: Volunteers help plan and execute community-based conservation service projects and events. They manage various event aspects, including logistics, participant registration, and on-site support. 4. Advocates for Sustainable Practices: By participating in activities like iNaturalist data inventory surveys and bioblitzes, volunteers and youth actively collect and document data related to local biodiversity, contributing to scientific research and informed decision-making. 

5. Creative Contributors: Those with graphic design skills or video creation talents play a pivotal role in crafting visual content that effectively communicates our mission and initiatives to a wider audience. 

6. Administrative Support: Volunteers assist in administrative tasks such as record-keeping, membership management, and document preparation, ensuring the smooth operation of the organization. 

7. Communicators: They actively share our activities and insights through social media and web page article submissions, helping to engage our community and expand our reach. 

8. Storytellers: Contributing to interpretation stories and narratives, volunteers help visitors connect with the natural and cultural heritage of our afforestation areas. 

9. Researchers: Volunteers engaged in marketing or heritage research delve into relevant data and information to support our efforts in promoting environmental conservation and preserving our organization's heritage. 

10. Invasive Species and Species at Risk Monitors: These volunteers play a vital role in identifying, reporting, and managing invasive species and species at risk in our afforestation areas, helping to protect local ecosystems.   No experience or education necessary, citizen scientist can successfully document organisms with the free iNaturalist app on any smartphone

11. Trail Caretakers: Trail volunteers ensure the safety and maintenance of our trails, making them more accessible and enjoyable for visitors. 

12. Event Support: Volunteers and youth assist in various roles during events, including site setup, managing food and beverage areas, cheering on participants, and volunteer check-in, ensuring the success and smooth operation of these activities. 

13. Positive Representatives: They represent The Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas positively and supportively in all interactions, fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere within the organization. 

14. Environmental Ambassadors: Volunteers and youth participants actively spread awareness about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and our environmental initiatives, promoting sustainability within the community. 

15. Active Participants: Volunteers and youth actively engage in board meetings and strategic discussions, providing valuable input and helping shape the organization's direction. 

16. Contributors to Fundraising: They assist in raising critical funds to support biodiversity and the organization's initiatives, ensuring the continued success of our environmental efforts.
