Help Protect the Public Interest in Health Professional Regulation
The Nova Scotia Regulated Health Professions Network (the Network) is seeking civic-minded individuals from across Nova Scotia to serve as Public Representative Volunteers on statutory committees of health profession regulatory bodies.
Health profession regulators are independent organizations established under provincial legislation to protect the public. They oversee the registration, licensure, and professional conduct of regulated health professionals, helping to ensure that Nova Scotians receive safe, ethical, and competent care.
The Network supports collaboration among Nova Scotia's 22 regulated health professions and maintains a pool of public representatives who may be appointed to regulatory committees across the province.
Why Public Representatives Matter
Public representatives play an important role in ensuring that regulatory decisions reflect the public interest. They bring an independent, community-based perspective to committee discussions and help promote accountability, transparency, fairness, and public confidence in health profession regulation.
Public representatives may participate in committee meetings that address matters such as:
*Registration and licensure decisions,
*Professional conduct and discipline matters
*Fitness-to-practice concerns
*Regulatory policies and processes
*Public protection and accountability initiatives
No healthcare background is required. We are seeking individuals who are interested in contributing their perspectives, judgment, and lived experience to support fair and effective decision-making.

Active in their communities through volunteering, leadership, advocacy, or civic engagement

Experience gained through community organizations, volunteer service, education, business, government, non-profit work, advocacy, governance, or other life experiences is valued.
Responsibilities
Public representatives are expected to:
*Complete initial and ongoing training
*Review meeting materials in advance
*Attend and participate in committee meetings
*Contribute an independent public perspective to discussions and decision-making
*Maintain confidentiality regarding information obtained through the regulatory process
*Serve for the duration of their appointment term (typically two to three years)
Training and orientation will be provided through online, self-directed learning modules
Additional committee-specific training may be provided by the regulatory body.
Committee meetings may be held virtually or in person.
