About This Opportunity
REmarket Volunteer Positions Descriptions: Outdoor Donation Collector, Information Table Attendant, Traffic Counter, Recycling Zone Supervisor, Donation SOrters, FreeMarket Station Attendants, FreeMarket Floaters
* Outdoor Donation Collector
● Identify the people who are dropping off donations, greet them, and then take their items inside the building.
● On Wednesday only, let donors know that their donated items will be going to FreeMarket. If anyone objects, please redirect their donations to The Salvation Army.
● Place donations for The Salvation Army and RCTO directly in the specified bins.
● Give FreeMarket donation items to the indoor FreeMarket Donation Sorters, who will then sort/distribute the items.
● Monitor the volunteer-only donation area to ensure that guests do not enter it. Ask any guests that try to wander in to return to the designated guest areas.
● Answer guest questions as you are able to and/or redirect questions to the information table.
*Information Table Attendant
● Remain seated/standing at the information table, greet visitors as they approach, and answer any questions they have about the event and/or items on display at the information table. (You will be briefed on the information table topics at the start of your shift, and you may be asked to take responsibility for certain topics).
● Ensure that items are not taken from the information table.
● If you are unsure about anything on the table, ask your supervisor for clarification/debriefing at the start of your shift.
● When in doubt about a question someone has asked you or your response to that question, ask a senior team member for assistance.
*Traffic Counter
● Keep track of how many guests donate items and/or how many guests enter FreeMarket using a tally counter (click counter).
*Recycling Zone Supervisor
● Sit/stand at the recycling zone and help guests put their items in the right place.
● Tell guests where to put the following items: ○ Pens, pencils, and other writing utensils (they do not need to be empty) ○ Batteries 3 ○ Ink and toner cartridges ○ Empty pill bottles (with labels removed—bottles with labels cannot be accepted)
■ There will also be a small donation box where guests can give a donation of 10 cents per bottle delivered to us. The donation is not mandatory but is appreciated and will be used to cover shipping costs.
○ Empty makeup containers ○ Dental waste (e.g., toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, and floss containers) ○ Disposable razors ○ Prescription eyewear (cases go to FreeMarket or The Salvation Army) ○ Cigarette butts ○ Single-use face masks
● You will also need to ensure that you can answer common questions about the items we recycle, such as the following: ○ Where/by whom are these items recycled? ○ What is done with the recycled items/what material(s) are they turned into? ○ What should I do with cosmetic containers that are not yet empty? ○ What should I do with my old prescription medications? ○ Can I put these items in the regular blue bin?
■ If you do not know the answers to any of these questions, please ask your supervisor/a senior team member at the start of your volunteer shift.
* Donation Sorters
● Ensure that all signage is in place and visible, including the sorting table signs that are intended to discourage guests from taking unsorted items.
● Triage incoming donations to ensure that they are being placed in the correct donation or FreeMarket zone. Donations will be passed to you by an Outdoor Donation Collector.
● You will triage/sort these items at the sorting table, which is a volunteer-only area. Guests are not allowed to take items from this table under any circumstances, and this rule also applies to WRG volunteers. FreeMarket donations are only eligible to be taken once they have been placed on one of the main FreeMarket tables.
● Place all FreeMarket donations on the designated tables.
● Place all ineligible items in the appropriate donation zone (if unsure, ask a senior team member).
● Ensure that visitors do not wander into the charitable donation area.
● If needed, assist FreeMarket floaters with answering guests’ questions and maintaining order.
● Ensure that volunteer members do not take any items that have not yet been put out on the tables.
● Maintain a polite, friendly, and inclusive attitude.
* FreeMarket Station Attendants
● Stay close to the table to which you have been assigned to ensure that the table remains organized and orderly and that FreeMarket guidelines are being followed. 4
● Remove any items that should not be displayed on the table to which you have been assigned.
● Answer any questions guests may have.
*FreeMarket Floaters
● Greet guests and ensure that they have read the FreeMarket rules and guidelines.
● Keep an eye on the FreeMarket, ensuring that the rules and guidelines are being followed.
● Ensure that FreeMarket tables are well stocked.
● Keep the FreeMarket tables as tidy and organized as possible, grouping similar items together (e.g., there should be a section for kitchen items and another section for clothing).
● Answer guests’ inquiries about the FreeMarket, but direct them to the front information table if they have other questions.
● As visitors leave, please encourage them to share their feedback via our survey (the link is provided at the information table, and you will also have little URL handouts to share).
● Maintain a polite, friendly, and inclusive attitude. If you encounter a challenging situation that you are not comfortable handling, please reach out to a senior volunteer.
*Qualifications

● Applicants who wish to volunteer as Donation Collectors or Sorters must be comfortable lifting and moving large bags, boxes, and items of varying weights.
