About This Opportunity

SMART stands for "Seniors Maintaining Active Roles Together". The goal is to enable adults 55+ to maintain quality of life, independence and to promote healthy aging. The SMART Program offers functional fitness classes in communities throughout Grey and Bruce County for older adults who may not benefit from traditional exercise programs due to health issues, mobility restrictions, chronic health conditions, etc. VON SMART classes are led by training and certified volunteer fitness leaders.

Each program consists of 120 minutes of exercise a week in two scheduled 60 minute exercise classes, and includes a falls prevention education component. There are two levels of SMART classes:

Level 1 (seated/low level) - is designed for adults 55+ with decreased mobility and or chronic health issues, i.e. osteoarthritis, COPD, etc. who are interested in improving their physical abilities but who would benefit more from seated exercises. Endurance, strength, flexibility and balance are covered, however these exercises are specifically designed for seated participation with the exception of some basic weight-bearing balance exercises.

Level 2 (medium level) - designed to improve health and quality of life by focusing on aerobic endurance, muscular strength, flexibility as well as balance. Weight-bearing exercises are used frequently and therefore the majority of the exercises are performed standing, with the exception of eight key strength and flexibility exercises which can be performed seated.

Classes include - Aerobic warm-up, Aerobic endurance, Aerobic cool-down, Strength training, Flexibility training, Balance training, Falls prevention, Education module

The following training is provided to become a SMART Volunteer Leader:

1. two days of practical training

2. in class mentorship

3. e-learning theory modules
