About This Opportunity

Overview of the Pathways to Education Program - Rexdale 

The primary goal of Pathways of Education is to address the academic disparities in the community of Rexdale by providing programs and support to enhance academic achievement and educational success and overall health and wellbeing of youth in the community.

Volunteers Must 

• Commitment 

 • Patient, respectful, and act within the boundaries outlines in their role description 

• Have energy and enthusiasm 

• Possess a desire to make a difference in someone’s life 

Key Responsibilities 

• Attends online Afterschool Programming assists youth with their homework and assignments in the applicable subject area 

 • Ask students about specific topics or subject areas that are giving them trouble or that warrant further exploration 

 • Review recent homework assignment and test scores, and work through problems or questions that the student did not answer correctly 

 • Working with youth one-to-one or in small groups to provide academic support in various subjects 

 • Assisting youth with homework, assignments, test, or exam preparation 

• Communicate with the Tutoring Program Coordinator about trouble areas or any other issues that requires attention 

• Rewarding students using positive reinforcement and feedback 

Qualifications/Abilities/Assets 

• College/University education or related work experience in particular subject area 

• Knowledgeable and skilled in subject area you want to tutor (Subjects including Math, Science, Chemistry, Biology, Advanced Functions, Calculus, Data Management, Physics etc.) 

• Must be confident with tutoring the particular subject area of interest 

• Previous tutoring and/or mentoring experience is an asset 

• Must be comfortable working with high school aged youth (13 to 18 years old) 

• Ability to build positive rapport with youth 

• Strong sense of empathy and compassion • Demonstrating sensitivity to the individual needs of students 

• Communicating clearly and confidently, both in writing and verbally, in order to accurately impart knowledge and give detailed instructions to students 

 • Using tact, patience, and good judgment when communicating with students and parents to maintain effective and collaborative relationship 

• Being a great listener, as well as being able to easily and efficiently identify students’ needs and difficulties (e.g., learning, and behavioural difficulties)

Program Days & Hours 

Mondays to Thursdays 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm
