About This Opportunity
Friends of May is a free program at AIDS Vancouver that offers an opportunity to form a connection with an older adult. Participants are matched with volunteers with whom they can socialize and receive support with simple, day-to-day tasks.
Volunteers may choose to participate in activities such as:
-Friendly visiting
-Community outings
-Light housekeeping
-Cultural connections
-Meal preparation
-Grocery delivery
-Assistance with technology and digital literacy
-Transportation/accompaniment to destinations or appointments
*All costs for activities with participants are covered by AIDS Vancouver.*
Tasks that the Friends of May volunteer will NOT provide include:
-Personal care such as bathing, toileting, dressing, grooming
-Medical or legal advice
-Assistance with or dispensing of medications
Volunteer-client matches are made based on client needs and goals, any common interests or values, languages spoken, volunteer/client availability, etc.
The frequency of volunteer visits will vary according to individual client needs and may range anywhere from a minimum of one visit per month to a maximum of twice per week.
Friends of May is named after one of AIDS Vancouver’s longest standing volunteers, May McQueen. May volunteered with previous iterations of this program, as well as reception and prison outreach, and we are pleased to honour her contributions to our communities through the name of this program.
