About This Opportunity

Volunteer Board Member (Director/Officer) 

Literacy Council York-Simcoe (LCYS) Skills Upgrading Centre is a non-profit corporation with nearly 40 years of experience engaging and empowering adults in York Region and Bradford West Gwillimbury to achieve a successful future through customized essential skills upgrading, digital literacy and employment-related training programs. 

The Board of Directors is responsible for setting the strategic direction and leading the organization with ethical governance, strong financial management and fiduciary responsibility. Our Board is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic community member to join our team. 

Time Commitment: 

Directors attend board meetings (currently virtually) on the fourth Thursday of each month from 6:30 - 8:30 pm and dedicate approximately 2-4 hours/month to other Board or committee-related activities as needed. Directors may be asked from time to time to attend meetings and events in person.   Directors are asked to serve at least one 3-year term.

 Director Responsibilities: 

• Demonstrate familiarity with governance and ensure compliance of the mission, vision, and values 

• Understand adult education (literacy) and the organization’s programs and services 

• Participate in monthly Board meetings, scheduled committee meetings, and the Annual General Meeting (AGM) 

• Contribute to developing, approving, monitoring and ensuring compliance with bylaws, policies and the strategic plan. 

• Review and approve the annual budget, quarterly financial reports and audited statements 

• Understand and ensure compliance with all relevant financial/accounting regulations, legal /legislative requirements and reporting obligations specific to charitable organizations. 

• Cultivate relationships with community members and represent the organization in the community.

• Maintain membership with LCYS and commit to confidentiality. 

 •Participate in LCYS fundraising and other relevant special events if needed 

• Serve on at least one committee as needed. 

Qualifications and Skills: 

• Candidates must be at least 19 years old and live or work in York Region 

• Candidates must have education in and/or a background in one or more of the following: business administration, human resources, information technology (operations) and/or the non-profit sector

• Candidates must have strong communication, interpersonal, decision-making, and teamwork skills, a strong sense of integrity and ethics, and a commitment to transparency and accountability. 

• Prior experience working with non-profits and a good understanding of the non-profit sector are valuable.

 • All prospective directors’ approval shall be conditional on a satisfactory criminal record check.
