About This Opportunity

Literacy Council York-Simcoe (LCYS) Skills Upgrading Centre is a non-profit corporation and charitable organization with more than 40 years of experience engaging and empowering adults in York-Simcoe to achieve a successful future through customized essential skills upgrading, digital literacy, and employment-related training programs. As an HR expert on our Board, you will play a crucial role in providing invaluable guidance on best practices related to human resources and organizational development.


Time Commitment:

Directors attend board meetings (currently virtually) on the fourth Thursday of each month from 6:30 - 8:00 pm and dedicate approximately 2-4 hours per month to other Board or committee-related activities. Directors serve at least one 3-year term.



Key Responsibilities: 

The HR Representative Board Member will primarily focus on providing strategic oversight and guidance in the following areas:

  • Contribute to the development and review of HR policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with laws and best practices.
  • Provide insights on compensation and recognition programs.
  • Guide organizational structure and staffing requirements to support program delivery and sustainability.
  • Identify potential HR-related risks and advise on mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with privacy legislation and other relevant regulations regarding HR and HR data.
  • Guide ethical considerations in volunteer and staff management.
  • Contribute to discussions on organizational culture, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Participate in strategic planning sessions, offering an HR perspective on long-term goals and initiatives.
  • Participate in all scheduled board meetings.
  • Serve on board committees as required.
  •  Fulfill all fiduciary duties of a board member, including financial oversight and adherence to the organization's bylaws.
  • Champion the organization's mission and programs within the community.
  • Maintain membership with LCYS and commit to confidentiality.
  • Participate in LCYS fundraising and other relevant special events if needed.
  • Serve on at least one committee as needed.

     

              Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive professional experience in Human Resources, with a strong understanding of HR best   practices, employment law, and organizational development.
  • Knowledge of Canadian/Provincial labour laws and regulations (Ontario).
  • Candidates must be at least 19 years old and live or work in York Region
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, decision-making, strategic thinking, analytical abilities, teamwork skills, a strong sense of   integrity and ethics, and a commitment to transparency and accountability.
  • Prior experience working with non-profits and a good understanding of the non-profit sector are valuable. 
  • Proficiency in virtual communication tools (e.g., Zoom, Teams & Google Meet).
  • The approval of all prospective directors shall be conditional upon a satisfactory criminal record check.
