 President – Volunteer Position About the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society…. The Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society is a not-for-profit society, established in 1989. Our members believe that individuals with Down syndrome are capable of full participation in society and should be given the opportunity to develop their potential. To make this mission come to life, the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society aims to: Provide information, support, and resources to individuals with Down Syndrome in BC and their families Provide information about Down Syndrome and resources to people and organizations who support individuals with Down Syndrome and their families Advocate that governments and appropriate agencies provide the special resources often needed by individuals with Down Syndrome and their families Lobby for appropriate educational, vocational, and social opportunities Support families and increase public awareness Network with other organizations and individuals PURPOSE OF ROLE The President is responsible for ensuring that the Board of Directors and its members are aware of and fulfill their governance responsibilities; are comply with applicable laws, and bylaws; conducts board business professionally, effectively and efficiently; and are accountable to the board of directors for their performance. In order to fulfill these responsibilities, and subject to the organization’s bylaws, the President presides over board meetings, or delegates a replacement when required, proposes policies and practices, may sit on various committees, monitors the performance of the Directors and Officers with input from the Executive Director, submits various reports to the board, to funders, and to other “stakeholders”; proposes the creation of committees; appoints members to such committees; and performs other duties as the need arises and/or as defined in the bylaws. The President has a right to vote, however, the impartiality required of the presiding officer of an assembly precludes exercising the right to make motions or debate while presiding and requires reframing from voting except when the vote is by ballot, or whenever his or her vote will affect the result. ACCOUNTABILITIES The President is accountable to the Board of Directors or Members as specified in the bylaws. The President may delegate specific duties to the Executive Director, Board members and /or committees as appropriate; however, the accountability for them remains with the President. Works collaboratively with Board members and the Executive Director to set organizational goals. Goals should include community outreach, organizational capacity, fundraising and capital improvements. Creates a strategic plan with specific measurable outcomes. The President schedules, leads, and determines the frequency of board meetings. Exercises personal leadership in the motivation or other officers, board members, committee members, the membership and staff. Appears and speaks on several public occasions. SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS Strong Leadership Skills Ability to understand and manage fiscal affairs, as well as generate revenue Flexible to address emerging issues and provide support where needed Outstanding presentation and communication skills and the experience and proclivity to be an outgoing spokesperson, relationship builder, and fundraiser Strong commitment to the professional development of staff Successful track record of recruiting and retaining a diverse team of Directors and volunteers Excellent coalition building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; a persuasive negotiator able to achieve consensus amongst differing opinions Prior non-profit experience would be an asset Significant board development, fundraising, marketing/branding, fiscal management, QuickBooks, and accounting experience would be helpful LMDSS uses Office 365 and Microsoft suite of apps to complete our business and to communicate internally. All Board members will be required to use Office 365 to meet our privacy guidelines and controls. We will support your learning needs.
