About This Opportunity
Position Summary:
Volunteer Delivery Drivers play a vital role in ensuring clients receive nutritious meals while also providing a friendly social connection. As the frontline representatives of Edmonton Meals on Wheels (EMOW), drivers must adhere to strict delivery timelines, demonstrate strong communication skills, and work independently with phone support from the Driver Volunteer Coordinator. This position is both demanding and rewarding, directly impacting the well-being of community members.
Responsibilities:
• Pick up meals from an assigned depot or the EMOW downtown location and deliver them according to the route list within the allotted time.
• Provide brief (5-10 minute) friendly visits with clients who are receptive, maintaining a positive and non-judgmental attitude.
• Monitor and report any noticeable changes in client behavior or concerns to staff.
• Report any undeliverable meals to staff immediately.
• Return route sheets, empty meal delivery bins, and undelivered meals to the assigned depot after completing deliveries.
• Provide at least 24 hours’ notice for any shift absences to allow time for coverage.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Possess a valid driver’s license and a reliable, registered, and insured vehicle.
• Successfully pass a criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening.
• Fluent in spoken and written English.
• Demonstrate proper food handling practices.
Position Requirements
• Physical ability to walk up and down three flights of stairs.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 15 kg.
• Capable of delivering between 4-12 meals within the designated timeframe.
• Strong judgment and decision-making skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with clients, staff, and other volunteers.
• Comfortable working with people of various ages, abilities, and backgrounds.
• Willingness to accept supervision and guidance.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
Decisions & Accountability
• Volunteers must commit to a minimum of six (6) months.
• Typical commitment is three (3) shifts per month, though schedules are flexible.
• Volunteers must notify the office as soon as possible if unable to attend a shift.
o Last-minute cancellations put stress on operations and affect clients who depend on this service.
o Two consecutive unexcused absences may result in termination from the program.
Work Environment & Schedule
• Shift times: Monday – Friday: 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM, and/or Wednesday & Thursday: 4:30 PM – 7:00 PM
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
