General Description:
The Volunteer Gallery Attendant is the first point of contact for the public when they visit Gallery 235. They are responsible for monitoring the gallery and the safety and security of artwork on display, as well as maintaining a friendly and welcoming experience for visitors. The Volunteer Gallery Attendant will work in pairs, with another volunteer present who can cover breaks as needed. A resource binder will be provided with information about the current exhibit, key contacts and other important information.
REVIVE is a group exhibition featuring the work of seven local and international artists and designers, exploring endangered creative practices and materials as vital expressions of storytelling and identity. Featuring Judy Anderson, Delali Cofie, Justine Gustafson, Ji Hee Kim, Mari Koppanen, Roda Medhat and Jessie Sohpaul, this multidisciplinary exhibition includes a broad range of works in sculpture, installation, photography, functional objects, and textiles that explore the intersections of tradition and innovation. Shifts:
Wednesday to Sunday 11:45am to 3:15pm, 2:45pm to 6:15pm
REVIVE Exhibitions runs from January 24, 2025 to March 30, 2025
Duties:
- Greet visitors and share information about Harbourfront Centre and visual arts programming
- Open and close Gallery 235, turning on/off any audiovisual equipment and lights
- Maintain general tidiness of the workstation and exhibition venue
- Orient visitors to gallery etiquette (i.e. not touching the artwork, advising on how to interact with interactive artwork, no food or drink in the space, and no running or playing in the gallery).
- May require circulating the gallery area during opening hours when busy
- Check on safety and security vitrine displays in the main building corridors at the beginning and end of each day, ensuring they always remain locked
- Keep track of daily visitor count using clicker provide
- Comfortable using a radio (training will be provided)
Skills:
- General interest and knowledge of contemporary visual art
- Excellent knowledge of Harbourfront Centre site and programming (can give directions, answer general inquiries)
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public
- Must complete Gallery Attendant training
Health and Safety:
- Position may require working alone for short periods (while covering breaks for other volunteers, or if another volunteer calls in sick)
- Contact for Security desk and visual arts staff will be provided in case of emergencies (Note: You may need to use your cell phone to reach them)
- Self-assess for COVID-19 symptoms
Dress Code:
- Volunteer T-shirt (Will be provided on your first shift)
- Volunteer lanyard
- Close toed shoes
- Dress presentably (clean, non-ripped clothing)

Commitment:
- Volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of four shifts per month. If you cannot commit to this, please get in touch with the volunteer office to discuss other options.
- Priority will be given to volunteers who can commit to covering weekend shifts.
- Interested volunteers must complete an interview with the volunteer department and visual arts department, and commit to attending an in person training
