Job purpose
Primarily provide hands on husbandry of orphaned wildlife while providing specialized care to animals admitted with injuries.
Part of a broader team helping to give orphaned or injured wildlife a second chance.
Animal advocates who volunteer their time, hard work and expertise; contributing to a safe place where we come together to learn and understand living with wildlife.
Duties and responsibilities
• Food preparation that includes handling of raw animal meat, preparing formula, cutting fruits and vegetables, and measuring/weighing food portions
• Provide fresh water and food as per the daily feeding schedule
• Hand and tube feeding
• Maintain health and feeding records for animals in rehabilitation
• Assist with room temp and incubator water level monitoring
• Ensure all animals in assigned room are cared for during your shift
• Administer prescribed medications
• Wound care ensuring sterile methods are used to avoid infection
• Calculate and administer SQ fluids
• Assist with animal intake assessment
• Contribute to wildlife enrichment for both indoor and outdoor enclosures
• Help with transfer / release of animals into the wild
• Wash and disinfect food prep areas, dishes, bottles, and syringes
• Complete daily sundry duties as assigned ie: sweep and mop floors, garbage removal, cleaning volunteer bathrooms and common rooms or other cleaning and organizing tasks
• Monitoring supplies to ensure appropriate levels are maintained and inventory control sheets are up to date
• Clean indoor cages and enclosures; disinfecting, replacing bedding, removing old boughs
• Clean, disinfect and re stock carry cages
• Immediately report any observed changes in animal behavior and/or health to staff
• Attend weekly team meetings Qualifications
• Minimum 18 years of age
• Rabies vaccination and tetanus vaccination mandatory
• Mature, reliable and conscientious with a commitment to quality
• Adaptable to a changing environment and willingness to take job direction
• Ability to take initiative to complete tasks without having to be asked
• Able to work under pressure while maintaining a positive attitude and calm demure
• Able to perform physically demanding tasks, such as heavy lifting
• Comfortable in building relationships with new people
• Enjoy being a contributor in a broader team as well as able to work independently with little supervision once trained
• Pre-work: study sheets will be emailed prior to start date
. Upon arrival, volunteers must pass a written quiz prior to working with rehab animals
Working conditions
• Able to work outdoors regardless of the weather conditions
• Free shared accommodations are provided; volunteers are responsible for their own meals
• Comfortable working in remote area; nearest town is 40km away
• Minimum 4 consecutive weeks of service; except for baby season from mid-April to mid July where 8 consecutive weeks of service is required
• Shifts are scheduled on a rotating basis 5 days a week; 2 days off are not back to back
• Flexibility in working evenings and weekends or as required Training
