About This Opportunity

About Us

The Gorge Waterway Nature House is a communal educational space located in Esquimalt Gorge Park and operated by the Gorge Waterway Action Society (GWAS), a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the Gorge Waterway. GWAS acts as stewards for Esquimalt Gorge Park, where the Nature House is located.

The Nature House offers:

  • a touch tank with live marine animals from our coast;
  • various displays that provide hands-on learning about local terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems;
  • a library of books about local ecosystems;
  • a "Kids' Zone" with books, colouring activities, and games.

About You

You’re an outgoing and dedicated individual eager to share your passion for the Gorge, its ecosystems, and its community with visitors of all ages. You’re available on weekends during the spring, summer and/or fall.

Your responsibilities include:

  • providing information about the local area and walking visitors through our displays;
  • participating in educational programs and activities within the park, including guided nature walks;
  • leading touch tank demonstrations and other interactive activities;
  • operating a small concession and gift shop.

No experience is necessary, but interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and knowledge of/eagerness to learn about the area are assets! This is a great opportunity to learn about the field of environmental education and outreach while getting involved in your community.

Commitment

The Nature House is open 7 days/week from 10-4 (10-7:30 on Mondays) until the end of August. Time commitment varies, but we ask for at least 6 hrs (1 full shift or 2 half shifts) per month. All shifts will be done in pairs. As this position involves interaction with children, a Criminal Record Check is required.

Volunteer Requirements

Whether you meet these requirements or not, we encourage you to share your interest in us. You may still be a fit for a different opportunity with our organization.

  • Minimum 16 years old
  • Willing to undergo a background or police records check
  • Comfortable commuting to opportunity location
