About This Opportunity

You receive the pup when they are 8 weeks old and are responsible for their care and training under the direction of our Puppy Training Supervisor until the pup is ready to enter advanced training. This is approximately a 1.5 - 2 year time commitment. It is important to remember that you will be raising a future service dog that needs to follow a specific training protocol. In addition to scheduled appointments and obedience classes you must have the time necessary to devote to training the dog on a daily basis. Puppy Raisers should be prepared to:
  • Set aside the first couple of weeks to devote to settling in your pup at home
  • Agree not to travel within the first 4 months you have the pup unless you are able to take the pup with you. Establishing the foundation for training is important.
  • It is preferable for you to commit the time to raising this pup with no more than one or perhaps two times away lasting no more than 2 weeks.
  • Meet with the Puppy Training Supervisor at least once monthly at different locations throughout the city to work on different skills and for your Supervisor to observe skills that you have been working on. Appointments are scheduled Mon –Thurs between 9-3
  • Be prepared to attend weekly obedience classes with the pup until the pup is about 5 months old. Continue to attend obedience classes bi-weekly for the remainder of the time the pup is with you. Thursday mornings 10-12.
  • As well as the scheduled meetings you are required to take your pup with you for socialization exposure as directed by your Puppy Training Supervisor. This includes public transportation, malls, restaurants, downtown areas etc...
  • If there are children in the home they must be of school age
  • You must have a vehicle available to you
  • Our dogs are not to be left alone for more than 4 hours a day
  • You must be able to control a large dog
  • While the majority of the costs of the pup are covered by the organization such as food and vet bills, you are expected to cover the cost of a bed or beds for the pup, a baby gate if needed, toys as needed and perhaps some incidental items.
